My First Facebook Ad Campaign Case Study

Is Facebook Ads a good channel to find clients looking to get a website for their business? And if it is, how many good leads can you get with a $15 budget? Well, you are about to find out.

The Goal

I design and build websites on WordPress, after which I optimize them for SEO. Before trying my hands on  Facebook ads, I heavily used Upwork to get my clients. The problem was, Upwork wasn’t so reliable – the feast and famine cycle was brutal at times.

So I turned to Meta ads.

My Approach

This was my first time trying to get leads using Facebook, and I tried to be as cautious as I could. Call me a sissy, I pretty don’t care…lol.

Anyway, I decided to start with a $15 budget. In fact, I started with $10, but things went a bit catastrophic (another lol 😅). Don’t worry, I will give you the full gist shortly.

Since this was my first lead generation campaign, I tried to keep things as simple as possible. People only had to click the “chat me” button, which brought them directly into my WhatsApp dm.

As for the audience, the truth is, I had zero idea of who I was supposed to target. Heck, I wasn’t even sure audience targeting would work.

So, I kept it broad. I just went after people based in Lagos.

For my creatives, I used two: one static and one video.

This is the static:

And this is the link to the video.

Errhmm….what else? I think that’s pretty much it. Let’s now review the outcome of the ad.

Outcome

As I mentioned earlier, the outcome of that ad campaign was far from what I expected; it just didn’t run. I panicked.

I instantly rushed to Reddit to see if I could find a solution.

At first, I duplicated the campaign and re-launched it. It still didn’t run.

Then I changed my budget from $10 to $15, and instantly the campaign picked up.

I let the campaign run for about 5 days before Facebook cut it off due to depleted budget.

The result?

I got about 38 leads. By leads, I mean people who clicked through the ad to my Whatsapp. Of that number, about 10 were spam messages. The others didn’t even know what they were looking for.

It was only 4 people who showed promising signs, but they quickly lost interest. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a single client from that ad.

What I Plan to Do Differently

Burning money on Facebook ad without seeing any results can be painful. I believe my mistake was that I didn’t put up any form of structure to qualify those leads. This made it easy for any Tom, Dick and Harry to click through the ad.

I plan to correct this in my next ad campaign.
